A Christie’s Expert On…
Collecting Old Masters
London-based Old Master and Early British Paintings Specialist Alexis Ashot on what to look out for.
What is an “Old Master”?
The phrase was originally used by British contemporary artists and writers of the 18th century – people like Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and JMW Turner, who were “Young British Artists” of their day – to describe the earlier artists they admired: van Eyck, Titian Botticelli, da Vinci, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt, to name just a few.
What is particularly collectible?
There has been a noticeable rise in demand for the Renaissance period – 15th/16th-century artists such as Botticelli, Bellini, and da Vinci – and for the Northern European School, like Brueghel and Cranach.
How might buyers start collecting?
Invest in a good book on the subject, visit museums to see what you like, then come to an Old Masters preview at Christie’s! And don’t be afraid to buy – whatever your level, this is a relatively safe place to invest.
Why are Old Masters so popular?
There’s scope for treasure hunting and making “discoveries.” There are major artists who are waiting to be reassessed – as Vermeer once was, having lain almost completely forgotten for 200 years until his “rediscovery” in 1868.

Tour
Are you experienced?
Christie’s Travel, in association with Abercrombie & Kent, recently introduced a collection of exceptional art journeys giving travelers “insider access” to the art worlds of destinations such as Florence, New York, and India. In Florence, for example, guests enjoy a private view of Michelangelo drawings in Casa Buonarroti, among other treats. The itinerary for A Colorful Odyssey Through India, meanwhile, features a private viewing of the Mehrangarh Museum, and a private tour and artists’ dinner at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. The next Indian adventure takes place this fall (November 7-16), commencing in Delhi, and costs $7,493 per person, based on two sharing.
‘Trophy’ has become the new buzz-word in luxury real estate. According to the latest issue of Luxury Defined—our recently released study on the global prime property market—more properties than ever before were both sold and listed for sale at US$100 million or higher in 2014. As the number of billionaires globally reached new heights, so too did the price benchmarks for their trophy homes, as the world’s most affluent focused more and more on acquiring “collectible” residential assets in prized locations. At the less stratospheric price segments, the overall global luxury real estate market experienced steady growth in 2014, with US$1 million plus home sales up by an average of 16 percent year on year.
Now in its third year, Luxury Defined not only examines the world’s top 10 cities for prime property, but also analyzes an additional 70 key regional markets, exploring the dynamics and drivers shaping the globe’s high-end real estate market. Key findings from the white paper furthermore revealed that second home resort markets were red hot in 2014, leading the growth in luxury property sales, indicating an across-the-board recognition among high-net-worth individuals in the fundamental value of prime property ownership.
The Architect Q&A
Charles Renfro Diller Scofidio + Renfro, New York City
An interdisciplinary design studio, Diller Scofidio + Renfro integrates architecture with the visual and performing arts. We meet partner Charles Renfro.
Your studio was selected to reinvent Manhattan’s High Line. Tell us about it…
Our winning strategy was to not mess it up, to “save it from architecture.” The design is less an overlaid architecture than an analysis-driven design based on what was there already. We didn’t anticipate the impact the High Line would have on the city. We thought it would attract perhaps 350,000 people per year, but it attracts millions and is now one of the most visited cultural locations in New York.
What is the Diller Scofidio + Renfro style and way of working?
We don’t have a style per se. Rather, we like to create an effect or an experience, to create work that is unexpected, disarming, and a little bit unsettling. We challenge the public to live outside its comfort zone a little.
How do you approach a new project?
All of our projects are site specific. We begin by analyzing the site – not just the location or institution, but the site historically, economically, and intellectually. We try to ground our work in something unique to that project.
Which projects are you most proud of?
The project I’m most fascinated by is a “company town” in China for a Chinese-owned and operated leather-goods company. We designed a factory and housing complex for its workforce, and we’ve been tasked with rethinking housing and working conditions for laborers. That architecture has been leveraged to effect these changes is hugely exciting for me.
