Salesroom tales
Stills got it

How much would you pay for a bad photograph? A dollar? Ten? How about $322,523? That’s how much each of the 21 Untitled Film Stills 1977-1980 by Cindy Sherman would have cost at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale on November 12, 2014 were they available to buy individually. Of the iconic works, Sherman has said, “I purposely developed the film in hotter chemicals to make it crackle because I wanted it to look kind of bad and grainy.” Among the “bad and grainy” scenes depicted in the group of black and white photos – which realized $6,773,000, the highest price ever paid at auction for Sherman’s work – were a swimmer coming up for air, and a woman in spectacles and a garter belt gazing out from behind a curtain. Of her inspiration for the fictional scenes, Sherman recalled: “I was trying to think of a new way to take pictures and tell a story.” She stopped at 69 stills when she “ran out of clichés.” The sale, which also featured works by Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter, achieved a total of $852,887,000 – the highest ever total in auction history. “This was a sale of extraordinary quality and range,” says Brett Gorvy, Chairman and International Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s. “The landmark sale result is a reflection of both growing global enthusiasm and demand in this category.”

The Gourmet Q & A
Chef Michael Solomonov
Zahav, Philadelphia

Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov was born in G’nei Yehudah, Israel, and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is chef and owner at Zahav, a modern Israeli restaurant that brings the authentic flavors of Israel’s culinary heritage to Philadelphia. He also oversees Federal Donuts.

How did you get where you are today? I have an incredibly smart, hardworking business partner, and I am surrounded by people who are inspiring. I have always felt that whenever you see opportunity, go for it.

Why did you call the restaurant Zahav? It means “gold” in Hebrew. We used tons of Jerusalem stone in our design, and Jerusalem is the city of gold.

What is it about cooking that you love so much? The thrill of pleasing guests.

You’ve had quite a journey to get here. What did your troubled days teach you? {Solomonov recently admitted to drug and alcohol problems in the past, following the death of his younger brother}. Take any measure to not regress.

What are your hopes for 2015 and beyond? That the students at the Philadelphia Workshop School, who are turning our used Federal Donuts oil into biofuel, will fly a rooster-shaped Federal Donuts rocket to the moon.

Restaurant Report
Tutto il Giorno
Tribeca, New York City

New Yorkers will tell you that there’s no neighborhood hotter right now than Tribeca. Little surprise, then, that Gabby Karan De Felice (daughter of designer Donna Karan) chose to locate her new restaurant at its heart. Since opening, Tutto il Giorno has been garnering praise from hard-to-please locals not only for its hearty authentic Italian menu but also for its slick interior – the work of architect Francis D’Haene. Walls are made of cool, raw cement; the flooring is reclaimed oak. Orchids are dotted around, bringing an air of the exotic, and over the bar is a Swarovski-crystal chandelier made by artisans in Haiti, supported by Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation. It’s a space that, as Gabby has noted, is “pure and loft-like…and all New York City.”

Yachting
Bring me sunshine

Launched at last year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 30-November 3, 2014), the 140-foot Veloce yacht by Italian boatmaker Benetti not only includes two pools but also a gym and a massage room. When you tire of exercise, part of the fitness center’s wall folds down to become a balcony on which to enjoy a post-workout smoothie. Downstairs, the end of the boat folds out to create your very own “beach club,” complete with bar, grill, and sea-level sun deck.
